Dr Kanwaljit Soin asked the Acting Minister for Community Development if his Ministry will consider running a secular shelter for battered wives as there is no shelter run by a non-religious organisation.

Mr Abdullah Tarmugi: There are 4 shelters for battered wives run by 3 established organisations. These are the Good Shepherd Centre run by the Catholic Welfare Services, the Whampoa Care and Elliot Road Centres run by the Anglican Welfare Council and the Pertapis Female Centre run by Pertapis. These centres are open to any woman regardless of race or religion. No needy women has been denied access to these centres.

Except for the Good Shepherd Centre which has plans to expand its capacity of 25, the other centres are running below capacity. The centres run by the Anglican Welfare Council have a population of 52 against a capacity of 70. The Pertapis Centre has a population of 38 against a capacity of 60.

The Government does not see a need to duplicate the good work done by these welfare organisations.
