Dr S. Vasoo asked the Acting Minister for Community Development what is the progress of the implementation of the Small Families Improvement Scheme.
The Acting Minister for Community Development (Mr Abdullah Tarmugi): Sir, the Small Families Improvement Scheme was implemented on 1st January this year. Prior to the implementation, from as early as September 1993, a series of briefings and talks were held to explain the scheme to organisations. The assistance of community self-help groups, voluntary welfare organisations dealing with low income families, NTUC affiliated unions, grassroots organisations and Government agencies was sought to propagate the scheme to eligible families with whom they come into contact.
My Ministry also held a press conference on 20th December 1993 to announce the implementation of the scheme and to invite eligible families to apply. As at 15th July 1994, 124 applications have been approved.
