[Mr Speaker in the Chair]

Mr Teo Chong Tee asked the Minister for Education whether he will consider renaming Changkat Primary School in Simei Estate as Changkat-Simei Primary School or Simei Primary School.

The Minister for Education (Mr Lee Yock Suan): Mr Speaker, Sir, Changkat Changi Primary School was established in 1965. It was renamed Changkat Primary School in 1988 when it was relocated from Changi to its present site. Another change of name now would be confusing for parents and members of the public. It would also incur additional expenditure for the school and its pupils. I am reluctant to change the name of the school again unless there are strong justifications for doing so.

Mr Teo Chong Tee (Changi): May I ask the Minister whether he would make a decision for a change of name if another request is asked some other time?

Mr Lee Yock Suan: Mr Speaker, Sir, I think it would be a good idea for him to consult the school and maybe the parents and some of the students involved whether they are in favour of a change of name.
