Mr John De Payva asked the Minister for Information and the Arts why the reception for radio, television and telephone in some housing estates is poor.

Encik Mohamad Maidin B P M (for the Minister for Information and the Arts): Mr Speaker, Sir, radio and television reception in Singapore is generally good. SBA ensures that there is good reception nationwide, by setting suitable technical standards. However, there are some pockets of poor reception in Singapore. Poor reception arises because of terrain, high buildings or electromagnetic interferences which block, reflect or weaken radio signals.

There are various technical solutions to the problem of poor reception. One solution is to tap-off signals from a nearby tall building. Another solution is receiving the signal through cable. SCV is currently cabling the island and this is expected to be completed in 3-4 years' time.

Meanwhile, anyone who experiences poor reception problems can contact SBA or the broadcasters for assistance.
