[Mr Speaker in the Chair]

Encik Harun bin A. Ghani asked the Minister for Health (a) how many retirees above 55 years of age were hospitalised from 1994 to 1996; (b) how many of them could not afford to pay their bills; and (c) how many of them received assistance from Medifund.

The Senior Minister of State for Health (Dr Aline K. Wong) (for the Minister for Health): Mr Speaker, between 1994 and 1996, there were about 240,000 admissions in public hospitals for people above the age of 55. Of that group, about 15,000 indicated that they could not afford to pay the bills and were referred to Medifund for assistance. About 15,300 of them (or 98.7%) received assistance from Medifund.
