Dr Tan Boon Wan asked the Minister for Information and the Arts what is the status of the project to cable up the country and when the project will reach the private residences in Nee Soon South.
BG George Yong-Boon Yeo: As at the end of last month, the Singapore Cable Vision (SCV) has cabled up 80% of HDB flats or 580,000 units and 40% of private high-rise apartments or 35,000 units. SCV has also started to cable up landed households. Altogether, 70% of all households in Singapore have been cabled.
SCV is required by its licence to cable up the whole island by 1st January 2000. It would be able to cable up all high-rise apartments in Singapore - HDB and private - by the end of this year. For landed estates, SCV would cable up first those which have a high proportion of households wanting cable TV.
SCV will get in touch with the private estate associations in Nee Soon South and other constituencies to discuss their interest in cable TV.
