Dr Teo Ho Pin asked the Minister for National Development (a) what percentage of public carparks for heavy vehicles is occupied by holders of season parking passes; and (b) whether the Ministry has plans to build more public carparks for heavy vehicles.
Mr Khaw Boon Wan: There are about 38,500 Heavy Vehicle (HV) parking lots. This is more than the 32,250 HVs registered in Singapore. Quite rightly, most of these parking lots are privately operated, sited within companies' own premises.
HDB and URA supplement the supply with about 10,790 lots, 28% of the total supply. Almost all of these lots are reserved for season parking ticket holders. This is to be expected, given the nature of these car parks.
We would like to see more HV parks and URA is working with agencies to identify suitable sites. There are some requests for more of such parks to be located near residential areas. The challenge we face there is that the availability of suitable sites is rather limited, as noise and safety concerns are key concerns for residents living close by. But we will continue to try.
