Assoc Prof Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim asked the Minister for Transport what is the number of fatal and non-fatal accidents involving SMRT and SBS Transit buses in the last three years.
Mr Lui Tuck Yew: The numbers of fatal and non-fatal accidents involving SMRT and SBS Transit buses in the last three years are listed in Tables 1 and 2 below.
Table 1 - Accidents Involving SBS Transit Buses
Table 2 - Accidents Involving SMRT Buses
Under the Public Transport Council (PTC)'s Quality of Service (QoS) standards, bus operators are required to keep the number of accidents per 100,000 bus-km under 0.75 per month, to ensure commuter safety. All accidents are included in the computation of this accident rate, regardless of whether the driver was at fault or not. These also include accidents that do not involve other vehicles, such as when passengers are injured by closing doors, or when they fall while alighting. Failure to meet the standard attracts a financial penalty of $10,000 per month. SBST and SMRT Buses have not been penalised for failing this requirement since the introduction of the QoS standards in 2006.
