Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim asked the Minister for National Development in view of the recent months' strong interest in new HDB flat launches at Tampines and Geylang Serai (a) if the Ministry could update the House on the progress of the sale of unsold flats in estates like Jurong West; and (b) what actions have been taken to market them.

Mr Mah Bow Tan: HDB currently has about 6,000 unsold flats available for sale. They are located in the newer estates, such as Jurong West, Sengkang and Punggol, as well as established towns like Bukit Merah, Queenstown and Toa Payoh.
The stock of unsold flats has declined from 9,000 units in October 2005 to the current level of 6,000 units.
The main mode of sale for HDB’s unsold flats is via the Walk-in Selection (WIS) system, under which eligible buyers can book any flat on offer on a first-come-first-served basis. HDB also offers surplus SERS replacement flats for sale under its Balloting Exercises.
To reach out to potential buyers, HDB actively markets the flats by announcing the sales exercises through press releases, as well as through newspaper advertisements and other media, such as TV Mobile, radio and outdoor advertising.
