Mdm Ho Geok Choo asked the Minister for National Development whether his Ministry will consider the inclusion of Saturdays for free parking at HDB car parks and, if so, when will this be effected.

Mr Mah Bow Tan: HDB car parks are provided primarily to cater to the parking needs of residents. As many families get together on weekends and public holidays, as a result, the car parks are heavily utilised on these days. Waiving the parking charges for HDB car parks when demand is high could compromise the parking needs of the residents.
Nevertheless, to promote social interaction and foster family ties, the Free Parking Scheme (FPS) is implemented in more than 80% of HDB car parks on Sundays and Public Holidays (from 7 am to 10.30 pm). HDB is aware that with hourly parking charges, HDB is able to regulate the demand for short-term parking and ensure that residents need not compete with visitors for parking lots. However, currently, HDB has no plans to further extend the FPS to Saturdays.
