Mr R. Jumabhoy asked the Minister for Local Government, Lands and Housing what steps are being taken or contemplated to clear the slums in the Telok Ayer District.
Inche Abdul Hamid Bin Haji Jumat: Comprehensive schemes estimated to be capable of realization in four stages within 20 years have been proposed under the Master Plan for the redevelopment of slum properties within the whole City area, and include the provision of adequate school, marketing, open space and other communal facilities. It is estimated that in the Telok Ayer Electoral Division (it is presumed that by Telok Ayer District the Honourable Member is referring to the Telok Ayer Electoral Division) about 38,500 persons out of the estimated population of 51,300 persons live in properties which require to be redeveloped within the 20-year period, and may therefore be termed slum properties. Of these 38,500 persons it is expected that some 14,500 will have their "slums" cleared and redeveloped during the first two stages, and the remaining 24,000 persons during the third and fourth stages. Proposals for the early redevelopment of properties affecting 8,000 persons in the first stage are in hand.
