The Attorney-General (Mr C. H. Butterfield): Mr Speaker, Sir, I move the motion standing in my name,
That this Assembly, in accordance with the provisions of subsection (2) of section 8 of the Revised Edition of the Laws Ordinance. 1951 (No. 25 of 1951), resolves that the Governor be authorized to order, by notification in the Gazette, that the Revised Edition of Ordinances prepared under the provisions of that Ordinance shall come into force from such date as he may think fit.
Sir, it will be clear to hon. Members, from the terms of the motion, that the work of preparing the Revised Edition of Ordinances, which is designed to replace the existing Revised Edition which was brought into force in 1936 and, of course, designed to replace the Annual Supplements to that Edition, has now been completed.
Sir, copies of the new volumes have been in the Assembly Library for some little while, I think, and I have no doubt that many Members are familiar with them.
Now, Sir, all that remains to be done is to bring the new Edition into force so that it may take the place of the 1936 Edition and I am now asking the Assembly to authorise that this may be done. Sir, I hope that the new Edition will be welcomed by the Assembly and, of course, by the legal profession and indeed by all who have, from time to time, to refer to the laws of the colony.
Sir, I do not wish to say very much more but I do not think that I should allow this occasion to pass without expressing the appreciation of the Commissioners - one of whom was my predecessor - for the work done by the officers of my Department and, of course, for the work done by the Government Printer and his staff. I am sure that it will be generally agreed that the Government Printer has produced a very handsome and well-bound Edition of the Laws. Finally, I think it quite proper on this occasion that I should express my appreciation for the work of Mr Simpson - an officer of my Department - and one of the Commissioners who has so efficiently undertaken the bulk of the work involved. Sir, I beg to move.
Mr A. J. Braga: I have pleasure to second it.
Question put, and agreed to.
Resolved,
That this Assembly, in accordance with the provisions of subsection (2) of section 8 of the Revised Edition of the Laws Ordinance. 1951 (No. 25 of 1951), resolves that the Governor be authorized to order, by notification in the Gazette, that the Revised Edition of Ordinances prepared under the provisions of that Ordinance shall come into force from such date as he may think fit.
