Mr J. M. Jumabhoy: Mr Speaker, Sir, I move the motion standing in my name,
That this Assembly, pursuant to subsection (2) of section 477 of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (Chapter 150), resolves that the Singapore Port (Amendment No. 2) Rules, 1956, published as Notification No. S 157 in the Gazette Supplement No. 38 of 4th June, 1956, as contained in Sessional Paper No. S.L. 20 of 1956, be approved.
Sir, the necessity for an Assembly resolution is to bring into force the Gazette Notification, the purpose of which is to delete two landing places from the list of landing places now existing. These two landing places are: one at Hylam Kongsi and the other at Clyde Terrace, and the need to close them down is because there is a letter from the President of the City Council stating that work on the coastal road has been hampered because of loading and unloading from small craft along these landing places. When the road is completed, these landing places will have to go anyhow and therefore it is thought that it will help the construction of the road, if they were closed now. Alternative landing places are already built for the people formerly using these places, along the banks of the Rochore River and also at Crawford Street. Sir, I beg to move.
Mr Francis Thomas: I second it.
Question put, and agreed to.
Resolved,
That this Assembly, pursuant to subsection (2) of section 477 of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (Chapter 150), resolves that the Singapore Port (Amendment No. 2) Rules, 1956, published as Notification No. S 157 in the Gazette Supplement No. 38 of 4th June, 1956, as contained in Sessional Paper No. S.L. 20 of 1956, be approved.
