Mr Lee Choon Eng asked the Minister for Commerce and Industry what are the charges for admission to the cinema shows at Connell House (European Seamen) and Asian Seamen's Club (Asian Seamen), and to state the reasons for any differences in such charges.
Mr J. M. Jumabhoy: I am informed that the Committees responsible under the law for the two Institutions have made the following arrangements for charges for admission to cinema shows at their premises.
(a) Connell House: Cinema shows are open to all races without charge. Attendances, fifty per cent of which comprise Asian seamen do not exceed the capacity of the hall.
(b) Asian Seamen's Club: From 14th March, 1958 to 18th September, 1958, cinema shows were open to Asian seamen without charge. Attendances much exceeded the capacity of the hall and to discourage overcrowding the Committee has approved a charge of 20 cents per head for admission from 19th September, 1958.
