Mr S. V. Lingam asked the Prime Minister (a) what was the total cost, giving breakdown details, of the decoration in May, 1960, of "Sri Temasek"; (b) what was the purpose of beautifying and air-conditioning one of the bedrooms, and for whom; and (c) what is the monthly total cost, giving breakdown details, in the upkeep of "Sri Temasek".
Mr Chan Sun Wing (for the Prime Minister): Mr Speaker, Sir, I have been asked to reply to this question.
The total cost of decorating "Sri Temasek" in May 1960 was $194. These decorations were carried out in connection with National Day. In addition, a sum of $29,790 was spent on painting and structural works and repairs, and air-conditioning the lounge.
One air-conditioned bedroom was prepared for the use of State guests. The cost is 2,681.
The total cost of decorating "Sri Temasek" is $172.50 per month for one houseboy, $14.53 for a telephone per month, and $240 per month for water and light.
Mr A. P. Rajah: Could the Parliamentary Secretary tell the House whether these items of expenditure are covered by budgetary provisions?
Mr Chan Sun Wing: Further notice of that question is required.
Mr Ong Eng Guan: Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there might be other expenses covered by other votes which are not included?
Mr Speaker: Does the Parliamentary Secretary wish to answer that question? It appears to be hypothetical.
Mr Chan Sun Wing: Mr Speaker, I consider the question to be irrelevant.
Mr Speaker: The Parliamentary Secretary must depend on the Chair to decide whether a question is irrelevant or not.
Mr Ong Eng Guan: Mr Speaker, can the Parliamentary Secretary tell me why only one room is air-conditioned and not all the rooms, if they are meant for guests?
Mr Chan Sun Wing: We do not have many State guests visiting us often.
Mr Rajah: Could a Member of this Assembly use that room?
Mr Chan Sun Wing: No, he cannot.
Mr Rajah: Could a Minister of this Assembly use that room?
Mr Chan Sun Wing: No.
