Order for Second Reading read.

7.10 p.m.

The Minister for Home Affairs (Mr Ong Pang Boon): Mr Speaker, Sir, I beg to move, "That the Bill be now read a Second time,"

This Bill provides for the repeal of the Deportation (British Subjects) Ordinance, which deals with the deportation of British subjects from the State and lays down the procedure to be followed in deportation. It is a concurrent measure taken together with the Banishment (Amendment) Bill. Since under the latter Bill, which has just been passed, no distinction will be made between aliens and British subjects and Commonwealth citizens who are not also Singapore citizens for banishment purposes, there is no longer any necessity for the Deportation (British Subjects) Ordinance, which is both involved and protracted as regards the procedure laid down for deporting British subjects out of the State remaining on the statute book. Its repeal is, therefore, now sought.

Sir, I beg to move.

Question put, and agreed to.

Bill accordingly read a Second time and committed to a Committee of the whole Assembly.

Assembly immediately resolved itself into a Committee on the Bill.-[Mr Ong Pang Boon]

Bill considered in Committee; reported, without amendment; read a Third time and passed.

Mr Speaker: I believe the Leader of the House has a Business Motion.
