Inche Mohd. Ali Bin Alwi asked the Minister for Finance how much duty on sweepstakes was collected (i) from 1st January to 31st May, 1960, and (ii) from 1st June to 31st August, 1960.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance (Mr Low Por Tuck) (for the Minister for Finance): Mr Speaker, I have been asked to reply to the question:

(i) The duty collected on sweepstakes from 1st January to 31st May, 1960, was $1,213,656, and (ii) the duty collected from 1st June to 31st August, 1960, was $840,809.

The duty collected from 1st June to 31st August does not include all the monies collected as tax from the August season which extended into September. The figure therefore for the full season, 1st June to 30th September, 1960, was $972,226.30.
