Inche Mohd. Ali Bin Alwi asked the Minister for Home Affairs how many persons, classified under countries of origin, acquired the status of citizen of Singapore (i) by registration under section 9, and (ii) by naturalization under section 15 of the Singapore Citizenship Ordinance, 1957, during the period 1st July, 1959, to 31st August, 1960.

Mr Ong Pang Boon: Mr Speaker, Sir, it is regretted that the information regarding classification of citizens under countries of origin is not available, and no such records are kept in the Citizenship Registry.

No separate figures were also kept prior to 1st January, 1960, of persons registered under the various sections of the Singapore Citizenship Ordinance.

Bearing the above in mind, from 1st July, 1959, to 31st December, 1959, a total of 8,195 persons were registered as citizens under the Singapore Citizenship Ordinance. From 1st January, 1960, to 31st August, 1960, a total of 5,049 persons were registered under section 9 and 885 persons registered under section 15 of the Singapore Citizenship Ordinance.
