Inche Mohd. Ali Bin Alwi asked the Minister for Education whether all students of Malay parentage in English schools receive financial assistance from Government; what is the number of such students; and what is the total estimated cost involved for 1960.

Mr Yong Nyuk Lin: All students of Malay parentage in English schools, both Government and Government-aided, receive financial assistance from Government by way of remission of school fees which they would otherwise have to pay. There are 3,282 Malay students allowed this assistance, involving an estimated sum of $45,240 from August to the end of 1960.

Financial assistance is also given in other forms, like the provision of free textbooks and the remission of fees for miscellaneous services like sports equipment, library books, etc. The sum involved in this way has not been calculated because the information is not readily available, but will be supplied to the Member for Kampong Kembangan, if he desires it.
