Mr C. H. Koh asked the Minister for Labour and Law (i) how many (a) males, and (b) females, were registered is unemployed at the Labour Exchange as at 1-11-60, and (ii) of these how many had been on the register prior to 1-11-58.

Mr K. M. Byrne: Mr Speaker, Sir, the number of persons registered as unemployed at the Labour Exchange on 1st November, 1960, was 52,963. The number of persons so registered prior to the 1st of November, 1958, was 11,186.

It is not possible to say how many of the 52,963 persons registered on 1st November, 1960, have been on the register prior to 1st November, 1958. The registration is fluid and only those who re-register for employment are retained on the register. The persons registered are not registered according to sex, and therefore it is not possible, without a great deal of research, to state the separate figures for males and females registered at the Labour Exchange.
