Mr David Marshall asked the Minister for Home Affairs whether he has received any request from a detainee named Tai Yuen for release to enable him to pursue studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, and what action he proposes to take thereon.
Mr Ong Pang Boon: Mr Speaker, Sir, a request has been received from the father of detainee Tai Yuen appealing for the release of Tai Yuen to pursue his studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. The request has been forwarded to the Internal Security Council for consideration.
Mr David Marshall: Would the Minister indicate whether, in fact, that request was received in the month of June; whether he is aware that it has the support of a public body in the United Kingdom; and whether he is aware that there is urgency in obtaining a decision because Tai Yuen's place is being kept open by the somewhat important organisation of learning where it is difficult to get entrance?
Mr Speaker: That, of course, is giving information. I take it the hon. Member wishes to know whether the Minister would do something about it.
Mr Ong Pang Boon: Mr Speaker, Sir, as I have said just now, the request has been forwarded to the Internal Security Council for consideration.
Mr David Marshall: Would the Minister at least indicate when he anticipates a decision might be available?
Mr Ong Pang Boon: Mr Speaker, Sir, unfortunately, I am not attending the I.S.C. meeting today in Cameron Highlands, so I would not know.
