"Mr Ong Lian Teng: To ask the Minister for Culture and Social Affairs (a) the total number of employees involved in the publication of the Malaysian Mirror; (b) the amount of money spent on each issue; and (c) the Head and subhead of the 1965 Estimates which provides for the expenditure."

Pursuant to Standing Order No. 20 (2), the Minister for Culture and Social Affairs supplied the following answer:-

  1. "The Malaysian Mirror, published from March this year, stemmed from the need to keep the public informed of current affairs for the development of an enlightened public opinion in the interest of democratic Government. With our independent status, it has now been decided to abandon the Malaysian Mirror and instead bring out a weekly publication called The Mirror, with a similar objective.

(a) The publication of the then Malaysian Mirror and now The Mirror is undertaken by the staff of the Publicity Division of the Ministry of Culture. The four Editors in the Publicity Division, whose duties include the publication of booklets and other material, also contribute in the production of The Mirror which is issued in four languages.

(b) Approximately 62,000 copies of The Mirror in the four languages are being printed each week at a cost of approximately $4,245.

(c) The Head and Subhead of the 1965 Estimates which provide for the expenditure of printing cost are: Head A/C - Code 0801 Subhead - 2377 - Printing (non-standard)"
