Mr Ho Kah Leong asked the Minister for Education whether he will consider revising the salary scale of teachers who hold foreign university degrees which are not recognised in Singapore and who have completed the two-year training course at the Singapore Teachers' Training College.
Mr Ong Pang Boon: Mr Speaker, Sir, the recognition of foreign university degrees lies with the Public Service Commission and not with my Ministry.
The provision of the two-year training course at the Teachers' Training College is to enable these hitherto untrained teachers to obtain professional qualifications and thereby become better and more effective teachers. Professional training for this category of teachers is optional.
