Mr Ho Kah Leong asked the Minister for Home Affairs and Education what effective measures are being or will be taken to curb speeding by drivers of earth-carrying lorries along Jurong Road.

The Minister for Home Affairs and Education (Mr Chua Sian Chin): Mr Speaker, Sir, various measures have been taken to check and book drivers of earth-carrying lorries speeding along Jurong Road. These measures include the use of radar speed traps. patrols by the Traffic Mobile Squad and the use of unmarked pursuit cars. The Police is also studying the feasibility of introducing a more sophisticated radar instrument which automatically records on film the registration plate numbers and speed of vehicles which travel faster than the speed limit.

In 1976, 338 lorries were booked for speeding along Jurong Road. In January and February this year, 30 of such lorries have been booked for speeding. It is apparent that more has to be done to instil a sense of road discipline in drivers. Besides more vigorous enforcement, there will be a sustained campaign to educate the drivers on the dangers of speeding and reckless driving.
