Mr Teo Chong Tee asked the Minister for Home Affairs and Education whether an integrated secondary school will be built in Changi Constituency not only for children in Changi but for children from Pulau Ubin and Pulau Tekong as well.
The Senior Minister of State for Education (Mr Chai Chong Yii) (for the Minister for Home Affairs and Education): Mr Speaker, Sir, the current School Building Programme under which 36 primary and 30 secondary schools will be built is geared to meet the demands of school places arising from the massive shift of population into HDB new towns and estates. In Changi, except for the 300 housing units built by the Housing and Development Board, there has been no development of new towns or estates so far. The secondary school-going population from Changi Constituency is estimated at 2,500 to 3,000 and existing secondary schools on the fringe of Changi Constituency can adequately meet the needs for the present. However, the situation will continue to be monitored and action will be taken to provide a secondary school when it is needed.
