Mr Tan Cheng San asked the Minister for Culture and Science and Technology whether and when the Kim Chuan Village Community Centre will be rebuilt by the People's Association.
The Minister for Culture and Science and Technology (Mr Jek Yeun Thong): Mr Speaker, Sir, the Kim Chuan Village community centre referred to by the hon. Member for Paya Lebar was demolished in late December 1976 to make way for development by the Roads and Sewerage Department. Such development has resulted in the rapid resettlement of the residents from the area. Replacement for this centre is considered unnecessary as the remaining population is small and can well be served by the Lorong Tai Seng community centre about 1.6 km away.
The hon. Member may wish to know that the People's Association is in constant touch with the relevant authorities on future housing development plans affecting the constituency. If future population growth in Paya Lebar constituency warrants it, the provision of another centre will be favourably considered.
