Mr Lee Yiok Seng asked the Minister for Law and the Environment whether there are any plans to construct (i) a new market at Jalan Cheng Hwa to replace the present old market; and (ii) a market at Mandai Road 20 kms to cater for the needs of the residents in that area.

The Senior Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment (Mr Chor Yeok Eng) (for the Minister for Law and the Environment): (In Mandarin): Sir, my Ministry has no plans to build a market at Jalan Cheng Hwa. However, a proposal is still under study for a market-cum-food centre, off Lorong Malai, to replace the old market at Jalan Cheng Hwa and to resite the street hawkers in the area.

There is no plan to build a market at Mandai Road, 20 kms, as the population is small and scattered.
