Haji Sha'ari bin Tadin asked the Minister for National Development if the relevant authorities will reconsider installing traffic lights at the junctions of (i) Bedok South Avenue 1 and New Upper Changi Road; and (ii) Bedok North Road and Bedok North Avenue 3, and whether it is feasible to construct a pedestrian overhead bridge across New Upper Changi Road, opposite the Bedok Interchange, in view of the frequent accidents at the aforementioned places.

Mr Teh Cheang Wan: Sir, the Public Works Department is currently reviewing the overall traffic situation in Bedok New Town to meet the needs of the New Town when it is fully developed. This review includes the number of traffic junctions that could be allowed along New Upper Changi Road. On completion of the review, and if warranted, traffic lights will be installed at the junction of New Upper Changi Road and Bedok South Avenue 1 in the third quarter of the next financial year.

Traffic studies are being conducted at the junction of Bedok North Road and Bedok North Avenue 3 and, if warranted, traffic lights will be installed.

At present, most pedestrians cross New Upper Changi Road between the bus terminus and Temasek Primary School. A pedestrian overhead bridge will be built at this location. The number of pedestrians crossing New Upper Changi Road opposite the Bedok Interchange is small. There is, therefore, no need to construct a pedestrian overhead bridge there at present.
