Mr J.B. Jeyaretnam asked the Acting Minister for Communications if he will give the number of foreign-registered motor vehicles allowed for use in Singapore for more than a day and does the government intend to restrict the number of such vehicles and if so how do the recent increases for Singapore-registered vehicles achieve this end for foreign vehicles.
Dr Yeo Ning Hong: Foreign-registered cars are allowed free entry into Singapore for up to 90 days. Most of them are Malaysian-registered cars. Permits are issued for periods ranging from 1 to 5 days. The daily average number of permits issued for more than a day's stay in 1983 was 1,816.
The daily average number of permits for goods vehicles and public service vehicles was 75 and 6 respectively.
My Ministry does not intend to restrict the entry of these vehicles into Singapore.
