Mr Philip Tan Tee Yong asked the Minister for Education how many relief teachers there are in Singapore and how they are trained.
Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam: Mr Speaker, Sir, the number of relief teachers varies from month to month. On the average, there are about 1,000 relief teachers in our schools and junior colleges, constituting about 5% of our teaching force. The majority of the relief teachers do not have formal teacher training. About 150 of them are former teachers or retired teachers. They would have undergone a formal training course.
Dr Lau Teik Soon: Mr Speaker, Sir, can I ask the Minister, in view of the shortage of graduate teachers, that in the recruitment exercise they would give priority to the trained graduate teachers who are on relief teaching at the moment?
Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam: Mr Speaker, Sir, I am glad to give the Member that assurance.
