Mr Chiam See Tong asked the Acting Minister for Trade and Industry whether the Government foresaw in 1984 the impending downturn in our economy.
BG Lee Hsien Loong: At the end of 1984, the Ministry of Trade and Industry projected that growth would be reduced from 8% in 1984 to about 5% in 1985.
As it has turned out, the downturn has been sharper than we had anticipated.
