Official Report, 21 March 1996, Vol 65, Issue 17 · Open in the reader (summaries, search, filters)

The Leader of the House (Mr Wong Kan Seng): Mr Deputy Speaker, Sir, we have come to the end of this Committee of Supply and Budget debate. Even though Mr Speaker did not say very much, we can all hear that he has a throat problem. Despite this, he carried on presiding at the proceedings of the Committee of Supply. The seriousness with which he undertook his responsibility is admirable. No MP or even Minister can take advantage of his soar throat. He and you, Mr Deputy Speaker, exercised the "guillotine" with precision.

There was a record 417 amendments and our sittings were extended by 1 1/2 hours each day. Many issues have been dealt with and many major policies have been announced. Indeed, many Singaporeans have benefitted or will benefit from these policies.

As we come to the end of this Budget session, on behalf of all the Members, I thank you, and Mr Speaker, for your patience, endurance and indulgence in listening to us. [Applause].
