Mr Teo Chong Tee asked the Minister for Health (a) whether he will give a progress report on the construction of the Eastern General Hospital in Simei Estate; (b) whether the hospital will be re-named Changi General Hospital; and (c) what is the future plan for the present Changi Hospital.

BG George Yong-Boon Yeo: As at end of February 1996, building works are about 67% completed. The entire construction of the hospital is scheduled to be completed in December 1996.

The hospital will be named New Changi Hospital.

After the opening of the New Changi Hospital, the present Changi Hospital will be closed and the land and buildings returned to the State. The site has been earmarked by URA for sports and recreational use, in line with the development of Changi Point into a recreational resort.
