The Assistant Minister for Commerce and Industry (Mr J. M. Jumabhoy): Mr Speaker, Sir, I beg to move the motion standing in my name,

That this Assembly, pursuant to subsection (2) of section 477 of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (Chapter 150), resolves that the Merchant Shipping (Passenger Certificate Partial Survey Fees) Rules, 1955, published as Notification No. S 418 in the Gazette Supplement No. 109 of 23rd December, 1955, and as contained in Sessional Paper No. S.L. 57 of 1955, be approved.

This is a straightforward matter, Sir. In recent years there has been a growing demand by shipowners for a survey of part of the hull, the machinery or equipment of a ship. Most of these demands come from ships which are in transit through Singapore and which have a Passenger and Safety Certificate issued by some other government.

Sir, this motion is intended to regularise and regulate the charges by the Marine Surveys Division for the service that they carry out. Sir, I beg to move.

Mr Chew Swee Kee: Sir, I second the motion.

Question put, and agreed to.

Resolved,

That this Assembly, pursuant to subsection (2) of section 477 of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (Chapter 150), resolves that the Merchant Shipping (Passenger Certificate Partial Survey Fees) Rules, 1955, published as Notification No. S 418 in the Gazette Supplement No. 109 of 23rd December, 1955, and as contained in Sessional Paper No. S. L. 57 of 1955, be approved.
