Mr J. M. Jumabhoy: Mr Speaker, Sir, I rise to move the motion standing in my name,

That this Assembly, pursuant to subsection (2) of section 477 of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (Chapter 150), resolves that the Singapore Port (Amendment) Rules, 1956, published as Notification No. S 32 in the Gazette Supplement No. 7 of 3rd February, 1956, and as contained in Sessional Paper No. S.L. 8 of 1956 be approved.

This, Sir, is a straightforward case. The increasing congestion in the Singapore River makes it impossible for many of the motor sampans that ply on the River to find a mooring place at night in the authorised area, and therefore representations were made by the Motor Sampan Owners' Association to the Government and, after investigation, it was found possible to extend this area. Sir, the revised Port Regulations are now under consideration but that will take some time, and since the motor sampans are already moored in the extended area it is thought necessary to regularise the position by moving this motion. Sir, I beg to move.

Question put, and agreed to.

Resolved,

That this Assembly, pursuant to subsection (2) of section 477 of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (Chapter 150), resolves that the Singapore Port (Amendment) Rules, 1956, published as Notification No. S 32 in the Gazette Supplement No. 7 of 3rd February, 1956, and as contained in Sessional Paper No. S.L. 8 of 1956 be approved.
