Mr Soh Ghee Soon asked the Chief Secretary, with reference to the Singapore Sports Stadium,-
(a) how many members are at present serving on the Board of Management;
(b) how many vacancies are there in the Board;
(c) whether any action has been taken to fill the vacancies;
(d) whether the Government will provide the Board of Management with the necessary funds and facilities to build a sports stadium;
(e) whether any land has been earmarked for the building of such a stadium; and
(f) whether he is aware of the inactivity of the Board of Management and the reasons therefor.
Mr W. A. C. Goode: Sir, the Stadium Board has been allowed to lapse because the funds required to build the stadium were not forthcoming. In the circumstances, I do not think that the detailed points raised by the Member call for a reply.
Mr Lee Choon Eng (Queenstown): Mr Speaker, Sir, can the Hon. the Chief Secretary tell us then is there any intention by the Government to re-establish this Board in view of the sports activities in Singapore?
Mr Goode: The position of the Board, Sir, is that it has been allowed to lapse because we can see no prospect of the funds required to build a stadium being obtainable. In the absence of some prospect of funds I do not think any useful purpose will be served by reappointing the Board.
