Mr Goh Tong Liang asked the Minister for Commerce and Industry how many of the following classes of co-operative societies have been formed, up to date, with the help of the Government-
(a) Farmers' Co-operative Societies; and
(b) Fishermen's Co-operative Societies.
Mr J. M. Jumabhoy: The answer to question (a), Sir, is 11 including an agricultural co-operative union. The answer to question (b) is four.
Mr Goh Tong Liang: May I ask the Hon. the Minister whether any loans have been given to the societies?
Mr J. M. Jumabhoy: Off-hand, Sir, I can recollect one case where we gave a loan of $4,000 to a Ponggol fishermen's co-operative society. That was some months back. There was another case where certain fishermen suffered damage to their fishing boats and a loan was approved but it seems they were reluctant to accept the loan.
