Mr John Ede asked the Minister for Local Government, Lends and Housing whether he is aware of the unsightly conditions of the Crown Land between Dunearn Road and Bukit Timah Road from Newton Circus to the Farrer Road junction; and whether the necessary steps will be taken to make this area on a main highway more attractive.

Inche Abdul Hamid: Yes, Sir, It has been arranged with the City Council that the land between Dunearn Road and Bukit Timah Road from the Newton Circus to the City limit should be leased to the City Council for development as an open space with flowering plants and trees planted thereon. I am informed, Sir, that the development of this land as an open space has been approved and that funds have been provided by the City Council for the first part of a phased programme over a period of three years. The Land Office is taking action for the clearance of certain occupiers of the land and work from the Newton Circus end will commence as soon as vacant possession can be given to the City Council.
