Mr Seah Peng Chuan asked the Attorney-General-
(a) whether he has authorised the prosecution of persons employed by the Straits Steamship Co., Ltd., on board their ships for refusing to proceed to sea in pursuance of a strike note by their Union;
(b) the number of such persons whose prosecution he has authorised:
(c) whether a member of the Singapore Bar has been authorised by him to prosecute these seamen; and
(d) who is paying for this prosecution.
Mr E. P. Shanks: Sir, the answer to the first part of this question is none. The second part therefore does not arise.
As to the third and fourth parts, the position is that a member of the Bar does hold an authorisation from me to conduct certain private prosecutions which are, I believe, the prosecutions to which the question relates.
I have no authoritative information as to who is paying for these.
