Mr Tee Kim Leng asked the Prime Minister when will electricity supply reach the people of Zehnder Road in Pasir Panjang.

The Prime Minister: Sir, a scheme for the supply of electricity to the houses at Zehnder Road, Pasir Panjang, was considered by the Urban and Rural Services Consultative Committee in 1961. This was the provision of electricity supply to 58 houses at an estimated cost of $37,720. The monthly revenue from these houses was estimated at $22,620 for a five-year period - in fact, amounting to a subsidy of $15,100 or $260 per house. The Urban and Rural Services Consultative Committee received requests for the provision of such amenities from all over the island. As the funds available are limited, the Committee has to afford priority to schemes which it considers would benefit the greatest number at the lowest cost. This scheme was not included in the immediate programme for the provision of electricity supply to kampongs because of the small number of houses involved and the high rate of subsidy per house. It will, with all other schemes that did not get priority last year, be considered again later in the year to reassess its priority rating.
