PULAU SENANG PROJECT (Total Cost up to 31-12-62)

Mr David Marshall asked the Minister for Home Affairs what was the total cost of the Pulau Senang project up to 31st December. 1962, and what part of such cost represents payment for labour on the island.

Mr Ong Pang Boon: Mr Speaker, Sir, the total cost of the Pulau Senang Project up to 31st December, 1962, was $1,110,495. I take it that by "payment for labour" the Member is referring to payments for work done by the detainees as part of their rehabilitation scheme. If so, the amount paid out in this respect up to 31St December, 1962, was $30,677.
