Mr Ng Kah Ting asked the Minister for Education in how many secondary schools are second language classes conducted, and how many students are taking up a second language.
Mr Ong Pang Boon: Second languages are being taught to students in all the 114 Government and Government-aided secondary schools, including technical and vocational secondary schools and secondary departments of full schools.
Altogether, out of a total of 132,722 secondary school students, 112,997 students, or 85.1 per cent of the secondary enrolment, are being taught a second language in secondary schools.
This figure includes 32,591 Secondary 1 students for whom a second language is compulsory this year. A second language is being made compulsory in the secondary schools by stages, so that by 1969 every secondary student will have to sit for a second language in the School Certificate examination.
