Mr J. F. Conceicao asked the Minister for Communications, in view of the frequent disregard for traffic regulations and road courtesy by 'motorists and pedestrians, if he proposes to take appropriate steps to encourage social responsibility and dis cipline where the use of roads is concerned.
Mr Yong Nyuk Lin: I agree with the Member for Katong that there is, unfortunately, today far too frequent a disregard for traffic regulations and road courtesy not only by motorists and pedestrians but also by most other road users in Singapore.
This is reflected by the large number of traffic offences committed by motorists alone, which have come to the notice of our Traffic Police and Divisional Police, namely, a total of 146,297 cases for the six-month period from 1st April to 30th September this year.
Although our Registry of Vehicles and Traffic Police have been actively associated with the work of the Road Traffic Safety Committee of the National Safety First Council in the promotion of various safety-first campaigns this year and of others planned for next year, I can assure the Member for Katong that my Ministry will be mounting a sustained campaign on road safety and compliance with traffic regulations for 1969.
