The Minister for Trade and Industry (Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam): Mr Speaker, Sir, I beg to move the motion* standing in my name under item 2 on the Order Paper.

*The motion reads as follows:

That this Parliament, pursuant to section 7 of the Civil List and Pension Act (Chapter 52), resolves that the Schedule to the said Act be varied by deleting the figures "$338,360", "$1,213,500", "$316,840" and "$113,000" in the second column and substituting the figures "$385,000", "$1,495,500", "$346,600" and "$87,900" respectively.

Sir, it is proposed to increase the provisions for the Privy Purse and Salaries of personal staff by $46,640 and $282,000 respectively to meet annual increments, the 1982 NWC wage supplement as well as higher contributions to the Central Provident Fund and Skills Development Fund.

An increase of $29,760 for Expenses of the Istana household is required because of rising costs of public utilities, other services, stores and maintenance.

A sum of $87,900 has been provided under Special Services mainly for the replacement of motor vehicles as well as gardening and office equipment.

It is, therefore, necessary to vary the provisions in the Schedule to the Civil List as follows:-

for "The Privy Purse" from $338,360 to $385,000;

for "Salaries of personal staff" from $1,213,500 to $1,495,500;

for "Expenses of household" from $316,840 to $346,600; and

for "Special services" from $113,000 to $87,900.

Sir, I beg to move.

Question put, and agreed to.

Resolved,

That this Parliament, pursuant to section 7 of the Civil List and Pension Act (Chapter 52), resolves that the Schedule to the said Act be varied by deleting the figures "$338,360", "$1,213,500", "$316,840" and "$113,000" in the second column and substituting the figures "$385,000", "$1,495,500", "$346,600" and "$87,900" respectively.
