Dr Kanwaljit Soin asked the Minister for Health what are the plans for trainee posts for specialist training for doctors and what is the planned ratio of specialists to non-specialist doctors.
Mr Yeo Cheow Tong: The Ministry of Health plans to train about 40% of each cohort of graduating doctors as specialists. To accommodate this plan, my Ministry has made provision for 260 trainee posts in the various hospitals to enable the trainees to receive the requisite training so that they can qualify to take the post-basic specialist examinations.
The number of trainee posts in the different specialities is co-ordinated by the Ministry to ensure that we will have adequate specialist manpower to meet the needs of the country.
