Dr Kanwaljit Soin asked the Acting Minister for Community Development whether there are sufficient social service agencies in Woodlands and Marsiling areas and, if not, what are the future plans to remedy this.

Mr Abdullah Tarmugi: The Ministry monitors the demand for and supply of social services island-wide on a regular basis. It works closely with other Ministries and various organisations to identify the support services needed and their possible location and development.

Currently, Woodlands and Marsiling areas have the following social services:

  • Child Care Centres

  • Senior Citizens Clubs

  • Befrienders' Service

  • Sheltered Home for the Aged

  • Nursing Homes.

Between 1995 and 2000, the following new or additional social service facilities are in the pipeline for the two areas:

a) an additional 10-14 child care centres;

b) facilities for the disabled including residential, day care and sheltered workshop facilities; and

c) facilities for the aged such as Mutual Help Groups, Day Care Centres and a sheltered home for the aged.
