Mr Cheo Chai Chen asked the Minister for Education why the National University of Singapore did not conduct its own investigation into the cyanide poisoning of its lecturers.

Mr Lee Yock Suan: On 11th February 1995, a police report pertaining to the cyanide poisoning incident was lodged by the Head of the NUS Chemistry Department at the Clementi Police Division. The case was classified as "attempted murder".

The CID began an immediate and thorough investigation as soon as the report was made. The Chemistry Department co-operated fully with them during the course of their investigations. As it was an attempted murder investigation, it was inappropriate for the Department to carry out a parallel investigation. The Department took immediate measures to tighten and improve on safety and security measures.
