Dr Lau Teik Soon asked the Minister for the Environment whether his Ministry will consider constructing a roof for the Serangoon Gardens Food Centre and, if so, when.

The Minister for the Environment (RAdm Teo Chee Hean): Mr Speaker, Sir, the Serangoon Gardens Food Centre which was built in 1972 was designed with an open concept where parts of the refreshment area are roofed over and the rest open. My Ministry will consider providing roofs over some parts of the open refreshment area at the Serangoon Gardens Food Centre. The feasibility and extent will have to be studied in detail to ensure that natural ventilation and lighting are not compromised.

Dr Lau Teik Soon (Thomson GRC): Sir, first, I would like to thank the Minister for his positive reply. May I ask the Minister that, in view of the unique structure of the food centre, his Ministry officials consult the Management Committee of the food centre with regard to the actual requirements concerning the roof?

RAdm Teo Chee Hean: Mr Speaker, Sir, my Ministry officials and engineers will be happy to do that.
