Mr Goh Choon Kang asked the Minister for Communications if his Ministry has any short-term plans to relieve the peak-hour traffic jams at Upper Serangoon Road/Braddell Road/Lorong Chuan/Boundary Road.
Mr Mah Bow Tan: Sir, many of the key junctions in the Upper Serangoon Road/Braddell Road/Boundary Road/Lorong Chuan area are congested during peak hours due to very high traffic volumes. Marginal improvements can be achieved by adjusting traffic light timings and junction improvements. For example, traffic signals in the area have been brought under GLIDE, a computerised traffic light system, since March last year.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is planning to expand the Upper Serangoon Road/Braddell Road/Bartley Road junction as well as the Upper Paya Lebar Road/Boundary Road/Upper Serangoon Road junction into multi-tier interchanges. Construction work on these interchanges is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 1997 and LTA is also planning to upgrade the existing CTE/Braddell Road flyover into a three-tier flyover.
