Mr Charles Chong asked the Minister for Education how many children living in Tampines and Pasir Ris were unable to obtain Primary One admission in a school in their respective estates during the last registration exercise.
The Senior Minister of State for Education (Encik Sidek bin Saniff) (for the Minister for Education): Mr Speaker, Sir, at the end of Phase 2C registration, schools in Pasir Ris New Town were able to admit all applicants, except Pasir Ris Primary School where balloting was conducted for children living within one kilometre of the school. In the case of Tampines New Town, four out of 11 primary schools conducted balloting for children living within one kilometre of the school. All the applicants who applied to the other seven schools were successful in gaining Primary One places.
Sir, there were enough vacancies in schools at Pasir Ris and Tampines New Town to cater for applicants who applied at Phase 2C. In fact, there are still vacancies available in some schools at Pasir Ris and Tampines New Town for Phase 3.
